Activity description

The center is located at 25km from Brussels and can host up to 220 residents including 40 unaccompanied minors. There are different kind of services which are offered to the residents, among them : social support, medical service, reception, school support and leisure time activities. Volunteers will integrate the service of leisure activities, whose aims are, on the one side, to support children and teenagers in their schooling and, on the other, to organise leisure time activities, mainly in the social and cultural field, for the residents. Some activities in the neighbourhood are also carried out, whose aim is to raise awareness in the local community about asylum seekers. Volunteers will work with children and with adults.

Konaklama, yemek ve yol ayarlamaları

The two volunteers will share a flat in the area of Wavre. They will share a kitchen/living room area as well as a bathroom but each of them will have their own bedroom. They will get a travelcard allowing them to access the closest cities (Ottiginies, Louvain-la-Neuve, Wavre) & Brussels, located at about 30km from Rixensart. Volunteer will receive a monthly allowance (about 300€) for food & pocket money (120€).

Training during the activity

Volunteers will receive a pre-departure training by their sending organization before the activity. Volunteers will then participate in 2 ESC seminars organised by the Belgium National Agency (on-arrival and mid-term-meetings) . Additionally, trainings related to asylum policy & psychosocial aspects will be proposed to volunteers according to opportunities. Possibility to attend French lessons if needed.

Participant profile

We are looking for volunteers who are interested by migration issues & willing to interact with asylum seekers (especially with women & children). We are not looking for any type of special skills, motivation being the most important criteria for the selection of the volunteers. The best qualities of a volunteer for this type of project are: flexibility, open-mindedness, empathy, team spirit, interpersonal skills, ready to take initiatives & good capacity to adapt. Volunteers should be ready to live in an isolated place & to face residents who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
