Activity description

Lyhty ry is a non-profit association founded in 1993. Lyhty ry's ethical goal is to promote the well-being of developmentally disabled individuals, their families, and the whole society. The music workshop is a workshop for twelve adults with intellectual disabilities working in the performing arts. The workshop was founded in 2004 and has a unique operating model in Finland. The music workshop started with Pertti Kurika's Name Days and Kalle Salonen Band. The music workshop offers meaningful and professional development tasks for people with disabilities. Activities include performances, studies and trips. Individual and group skills develop. The music workshop provides an opportunity for actions whose imprint is strongly conveyed and enriches the prevailing culture. The music workshop offers:musical and theatrical performances, club activities and cultural events, DJ and karaoke services, Rental of studio premises and equipment.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Volunteer is accommodated in one of Lyhty’s housing buildings and will be sharing a house with other volunteers. Meals and transport are arranged through Lyhty.

Training during the activity

Welcome to work at Music Workshop! The role of the volunteer is to act as a mentor for the intellectual disabled with the help, support and with other workers. Working hours on weekdays 9-16. The volunteers will have a mentor working with him/her trough the year. The role of the volunteer is to act as a mentor for the intellectual disabled with the help, support and with other workers.

Participant profile

Good social skills and motivation to work with people with special needs are important. The work can be dynamic at times and requires such mentality. It is important to have the motivation to learn Finnish language.
