Activity description

Dublin Simon Community works with people who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. We work with people at all stages of homelessness in order to support them to move out of homelessness, to a place they can call home. Dublin Simon Community works to prevent and address homelessness across capital city of Dublin, and east coast of Ireland. Our aim is to empower people to access and retain a home of their own. Dublin Simon Community has a well-established volunteering programme, volunteers are at the core of the work we do within the community. Volunteers work alongside professional staff members to provide vital services to people who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. ESC volunteers will live in shared accommodation with other volunteers in the city. Often the other volunteers they share with are from a diverse range of backgrounds and nationalities. This creates an opportunity for cultural integration and development of language skills. The impacts on the organisation start with the individual impact on service users, volunteers can often offer an additional kind of support which enriches the lives of individuals. Training during the activity

Volunteers receive many training opportunities as part of their placements, these include Fire Safety, Manual Handling, Child Protection, Boundaries Training and MAPA training. This training assists the volunteers in learning practical skills associated with the types of activities they will be doing through their placement. Volunteers also have the choice to undertake a FETAC level 6 course through Technical University Dublin. Participant profile

Dublin Simon Community works with people who are experiencing homelessness and therefore may have a variety of different and complex needs meaning that our clients require varying levels and types of support. When recruiting we keep the role that the volunteers will be undertaking in mind and we look for volunteers who: - Are 18 or over - Have some understanding of homeless issues and are committed to social justice and community development work - Are committed to working alongside service users in an empowering way - Believe in the value of working as part of a team
