DATA MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Veraldarvinir

Worldwide Friends-Veraldarvinir

Hafnarfjörður, Iceland

Description

This project combines hands-on environmental action with structured data collection across all Worldwide Friends activities in Iceland. Volunteers support beach clean-ups, tree planting, soil erosion control, forest maintenance, and household waste reduction. Each activity helps gather key data such as the amount of waste collected, number of trees planted, and areas of land restored. Participants record, analyze, and help improve data collection methods while strengthening recycling and sustainability systems. They also contribute to data visualization, reports, and communication materials for partners and the public. This role provides practical experience in environmental monitoring, sustainability reporting, and community engagement while actively contributing to the protection of Iceland’s natural environment.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Participants stay at the Worldwide Friends Houses, which offer fully equipped facilities. Beds and bed linens are provided, along with wireless internet access and a washing machine. Rooms typically accommodate 2, 4, or 6 volunteers. Food ingredients are supplied; however, all participants are expected to share cooking and cleaning responsibilities. Since it’s always enjoyable to try new dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring their favorite recipes (and spices) from home!

Training during the activity

The project offers meaningful learning opportunities for volunteers, our organization, and the local community. ESC volunteers help strengthen our international dimension through internships, educational tours, and environmental projects. Participants join a 1-week WF Training Program plus the National Agency’s On-Arrival Training. Throughout their service, volunteers gain sustainability skills, learn basic Icelandic, lead creative sessions, and design and implement their own personal project.

Participant profile

We are seeking enthusiastic, motivated, and self-driven volunteers who are eager to take initiative, work independently, and contribute fresh ideas and scalable solutions that support climate action and sustainable living. A good command of English is required, as it is the main working language in our camps. Ideal candidates are open-minded, adaptable, and ready to live in a multicultural environment with other international volunteers. A commitment to sustainability and a genuine interest in addressing global environmental challenges are essential. A strong appreciation for Iceland’s nature and a desire to explore its unique landscapes will greatly enhance your experience. While a background in Environmental Science is an advantage, it is not required. We highly value volunteers who enjoy outdoor activities—such as hiking, camping, or swimming—as many project tasks and excursions take place in nature.
