Activity description
ABC Children's Aid is an Icelandic charity founded in 1988. The aim of ABC is to be a channel for Icelandic people to help children in unprivileged situations in developing countries to get education and home where needed. ABC is focusing on supporting children with education, food, clothing and medical help, through its partners in Asia and Africa. One of the fund raising methods is a second hand store located centrally in the Capital Region of Iceland, and this is where the ESC volunteers will be involved. Volunteer's tasks: Receiving goods for sale, categorize and evaluate all goods ABC receives from the local community; communicating with local customers in the second hand shop; participating in the day-to-day operation and administration, mainly in the second hand shop; learning about the benefits of a circular economy, with the possibility to initiate projects related to the reuse of used goods, promotion and awareness raising of a circular economy.Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
The volunteers will live in our volunteer house which accommodates up to 8 international volunteers. Each volunteer has a private room, kitchen, living room and bathrooms are shared with the others. Accommodation is in central Reykjavík. AUS will give food allowance. Local Transport: AUS will provide a bus card to the volunteers valid for the duration of her/his stay which covers the whole of Reykjavík. Public transport is easy near both the volunteer's residence and office.Training during the activity
A short on arrival training will be organised by AUS ICYE Iceland. ABC children help will also organise a task related training. A compulsory on-arrival as well as mid-term training will be organised by the local National Agency.Participant profile
The ESC volunteer should: • Have good English language skills. • Be able to organize his/her own initiative. • Be able to work under time pressure. • Be motivated, reliable and a good teamworker • Have an interest in circular economy or recycling/upcycling • Have knowledge of social media, Microsoft Word and Outlook.Activity dates
