Discover traditional masonry techniques in Nomeny!

Etudes et Chantiers Engagement Civique

Nomeny, France

The application deadline has passed.

Activity description

The city of Nomeny needs you to help it protect and enhance its historical and cultural heritage! For five years already, the inhabitants of Nomeny have welcomed volunteers every summer: The first year the volunteers worked on the devegetation and the repair of the walls of the ruins of the castle of Nomeny so that this place becomes a real space of life and local meetings. In 2020 and 2021, volunteers worked on maintaining the doors and windows of the Church of Saint-Etienne de Nomeny, listed as a Historic Monument! Last year a group of volunteers started the restoration of a wall near the castle. Objective for this year: to finalize the work!

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

You will be accommodated in tents. Don't forget your sleeping bags and mattresses. Toilets and showers will be available nearby, and a kitchen will be installed in the camp. All aspects of collective life (shopping, preparing meals, cleaning) will be managed by the volunteers themselves, on the basis of an operation that they will have decided on together (e.g. use planning, formation of pairs, etc.). They will be helped in this task by a community life facilitator. The goal: for each volunteer to be an actor in their stay with respect for others and community life.

Training during the activity

Accompanied by a professional heritage mason, this workcamp will be an opportunity for you to discover (or deepen) traditional masonry techniques. The objective is to restore a stone wall masonry with lime, several parts of which have collapsed. Concretely, here are the missions that await you: - sort the stones and organize the sorting in the workspace; - learn to choose the stones to raise the low wall to its original height; - reassemble the wall using a lime mortar - make a crowning with tiles No need for technical skills to register for this project: everyone is welcome!

Participant profile

This workcamp is open to everyone (regardless of gender, age, nationality...) with the unfortunately exception of people with reduced mobility, as the work site is not accessible to wheelchairs. If you need support in your country to register and prepare your trip, it is possible, do not hesitate to ask us by email. The only condition to participate is your motivation! Explain to us in your cover letter what drives you to apply for this action: we are interested!
