Activity description

Kongo Community Development Association [KoCDA] is a community-based organisation in West Africa, Ghana, precisely in Kongo of the Upper East region that has been working with Mondo NGO for several years. Our aim is to support, together, climate and disaster development in Kongo and Nabdam District. The Climate Change Volunteer is expected to provide technical assistance in the design of a climate change and food security program, biodiversity, water resource management, and a green economy in the Upper East region of Ghana with relevant institutions, implementing, and evaluating climate change related programming with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Forestry Commission of the Nabdam District. Sharing knowledge of climate change and professional experience and networks is the key to building bridges between activities and programmes.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteer will be hosted at the guest house, with titled lockable rooms, toilet, shower, and ceiling fans. There is running water and electricity and a kitchen with a refrigerator. The guest house is 5 minutes’ walk from the village centre and the ICT centre of KoCDA 7 minutes away. Mobile phone and internet service is reliable. Regular local buses travel to the region's capital, Bolgatanga (30-min drive). There is a market square at Kongo and small kiosks also open daily. The volunteer will receive a monthly allowance of 390 euros to cover basic needs and local transport.

Training during the activity

Opportunity to be actively engaged in direct community work with schools, students, teachers, EPA and Forestry Commission workers and other community members. Support the process of how climate change contributes to changing the lives of individuals in Africa and the possibility to contribute to that process. Possibility to collaborate with the Nabdam District Assembly, Environmental Protection Agency and the Forestry Commission in mutual learning and exchanging of good practices. Getting practical experience of development cooperation by supporting the implementation of NGO Mondo.

Participant profile

We’re looking for a person interested in the climate and environmental topic. Foundational knowledge of environmental policy landscape and literacy, and its management would be an asset, as well as some experience in strategic planning, decision-making, compliance, enterprise risk management, and organisational strategies. Competencies are largely skills-based and include supporting organisational change, helping to mitigate risk, engaging stakeholders, being actively involved in policy efforts beyond the walls of the organisation and maintaining other external partnerships.
