Activity description

Together with Mondo NGO, our local partner Uganda Pioneers Association (UPA) is working at the Masanafu Child and Family Support organisation (MCAFS) and Kikooba Infant and Primary School. UPA together with MCAFS focus on addressing the ever-increasing socio-economic challenges, with a main focus on Orphans and Vulnerable Children. At Kikooba Infant and Primary School, the volunteer will organise workshops, train teachers and help to organise extracurricular activities in school, and raise awareness about education in the community through parents/guardians. With MCAFS, he/she will improve the capacity and ability of partner schools to offer quality education to vulnerable school children and extra activities, conduct literacy and computer trainings amongst teachers and learners, and develop the effective usage of the community library and the youth resource centre.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Accommodation will be at Villa Mamu in Mengo which has private rooms, a big compound, a kitchen, a toilet, a hot shower, and Wi-Fi. Alternatively, some other place can be identified around Kampala considering convenience, safety and security aspects. The volunteer will have to commute each day he/she intends to work at Kikooba. It is possible on a motorbike taxi or local public transport (matatu). Kikooba area has poor telephone connection, and very low Internet connection. The volunteer will receive a monthly allowance of 450 euros to cover basic needs and local transport.

Training during the activity

During the deployment, the volunteer gets to experience community work by participating in various activities implemented by MCAFS and Kikooba School. Further development of project management, communication and leadership skills are anticipated.

Participant profile

We’re looking for a motivated volunteer who has some experience working with vulnerable communities and with government education agencies. A university degree in a relevant field (i.e. teacher, social work, community work) and a solid experience in teaching or developping of teaching materials, as well as Knowledge in management and operation of community libraries is an asset. English proficiency – written and oral. Computer skills: MS Office. Interest in work on digital media – website, social platforms, or graphics (welcomed). Flexibility and ability to adapt to local conditions.
