Activity description

This volunteering activity will be implemented in Thessaloniki, the second biggest city of Greece in the context of preserving tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Volunteers will need to organize events with music, traditional food recipes and traditional dances from the countries of the volunteers involved, create outputs such as videos, photo galleries or articles related to migrations and cultural heritage, a specific focus is going to be on the common cultural heritage between Greece and Turkey. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to create and edit a special edition of the "Balkan Beats" magazine dedicated to the subject, as part of their activities they will also organize two non-formal education workshops with methods to offer an in-depth look in the subject of migrations and cultural heritage.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Volunteers are going to be accommodated in a fully equipped building located in the city centre (Anagnostara, 13) near the main bus and train station of the city. It is an autonomous 5 floored building of 150m2 per floor and a terrace on the 6th floor. There are two living rooms and a big kitchen, showers in the common floors and toilets in every floor. Each volunteer will share their room with up to three more people of the same gender. Food is provided through catering for Monday-Friday, with extra food money for each weekend day. The city bus card is also provided to volunteers who want it.

Training during the activity

Task-related training provided by the organization United Societies of Balkans, in the form of workshops for history, interculturality and the use of media tools.

Participant profile

The participants will have to be between 18-30 years old and be genuinely interested in the project. Their motivation and interest to join will be important. At least a very basic knowledge of English (or Greek) is required, so participants have at least one communication language to be used in the field. Volunteers' interests need to to include one of the following topics: history and research, social media content production, video making, photography and/or writing. Due to the proximity in time, candidates with Green passport for Europe are especially encouraged to apply.
