Activity description

The bilingual Montessori Kinderhaus Wannsee belongs to the campus of the International Montessori School. It cares for about 30 children aged two to six years. The team consists of international staff members with different mother tongues. The district, which is mostly located between lakes, is a popular place of excursions and recreation for many people from Berlin and tourists. The Wannsee offers many opportunities for recreation. At the same time, the district is well connected to the Berlin transportation by the Wannsee S-Bahn station. The volunteers accompany the teachers and educators in their daily work. Typical tasks of volunteers can be: - Caretaking of the children - Supervising children and accompanying them while they play, reading books to them - Accompanying events or excursions to the forest, sports hall or other places - Initiating little projects with the children - Accompanying the morning circle - Kitchen work (e.g. preparing food, washing up after meal)

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Volunteers are accommodated in a furnished and fully equipped single apartment directly in the neighbourhood of the kindergarten. Internet access and a washing machine are available in the apartment. Volunteers receive a monthly pass for public transportation (bus, streetcar, subway and train) and a monthly pocket money of 180 €. Volunteers can participate in lunch at the facility. In addition, volunteers are paid a monthly meal allowance, including during vacation days (around 250 €).

Training during the activity

The volunteers will receive at least one German language course and additionally the online language course via the online system. The volunteers get the possibility to take part in the meetings of the team and will also have meetings only with the tutor on a regular basis. For the service in this oganisation it is necessary that the volunteers have a training in food hygiene. It will be conducted by the local health office. Moreover, volunteers will take part in two seminars, conducted by the German National Agency (one during the first weeks of the project and one in the middle).

Participant profile

The motivation of the volunteer to do a voluntary service and work with children is the most important criteria in selecting the volunteers. Other criteria might be: - very good English language skills (B2/C1), since the children are bilingual - basic knowledge of the German language is an advantage, but not mandatory - desirable: initial experience in the field of education Since 2021, it is obligatory that people working in kindergardens in Germany have a measles immunisation. If you do´t have it, please be prepared to get the vaccination soon after your arrival in Germany.
