Green Skills XIV (volunteer in ecovillage)

RELEARN Suderbyn

Visby, Sweden

The application deadline has passed.

Activity description

APPLY ONLY THROUGH OUR GOOGLE FORM: https://forms.gle/ELgnYCi4FMArMt1V6 No application made on youth.europa.eu will be taken into account. Our Green Skills XIV program will bring together 9 volunteers in Suderbyn Ecovillage which defines itself as a social laboratory, an experiment and a playground. The volunteers live and work as co-residents and have the opportunity to experience all the aspects of the holistic model of sustainable living Suderbyn offers for a year. It is an international community of around 20 people living tightly together and sharing resources. Sustainable living, eco-consciousness, community building and active citizenship are some of the core themes. There are 2 different positions the applicants can opt for. The work involves developing the physical infrastructure of the ecovillage and permaculture gardening. English is the main language of communication. Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteers have simple accommodation, either a small single room or a shared room with one other person. The same condition applies to permanent inhabitants and is part of the voluntary simplicity of life in Suderbyn. The nine GSXIV volunteers will start in March 2024 (no other date allowed). Food is ecological, vegan and is procured in bulk for the whole community. There is no meat and limited (private) dairy consumption. The main town Visby is 8km away. You can use bikes from our communal bikepool. There is a carpool on site and a bus stop close by.

Training during the activity

GSXIV imparts: Practical competences in organic/permaculture gardening; vegan cooking; eco-construction, maintenance and renovation; micro-scale energy systems and renewable resources; competences in project management and administration; communication skills: non-violent interaction, conflict transformation, group facilitation; theoretical knowledge on closed-loop systems, permaculture design principles, sociocracy, planetary boundaries and ecological footprints, alternative economy and transition culture. We encourage taking on personal projects within the programme.

Participant profile

The main criterion for GSXIV is the personal motivation of candidates to engage in a sustainable lifestyle and community living. It’s important to demonstrate a basic understanding of actual living conditions in Suderbyn. Those who show curiosity and enthusiasm towards the areas mentioned above are more likely to be selected. The project setting ultimately involves a rural lifestyle and might not be suitable for those who prefer urban activities. We are now recruiting people from European countries only (non-Europeans selection was in September). Good luck! Apply only through our form!
