Extra hands for civil society organizations 24/25

Extra hands for civil society organizations 24/25

ABF-Åland arbetarnas bildningsförbund

Mariehamn Åland, Finland

Activity description

Volunteers will contribute to our members associations assignments. The tasks are based on the organization's current needs, and on the volunteers interests and skills. The organizations are active in sustainability work in different areas such as inclusion of people with less possibilities, environmental work with recycling, which the volunteers make an active contribution to in different ways, and open youth work. The work is based on "learning by doing" and solidarity spirit where everyone can make an effort and at the same time get a chance to learn new skills and develop themselves. The volunteers work is to help the organizations with practical everyday tasks such as cleaning, sorting out, cooking, serving, gardening, marketing in social media, recycling, technical support and also with special projects and activities at youth camps. The volunteers will get to know Åland, its nature, culture and people by making a joint effort in the third sector.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteers have their one room in a shared apartment (with kitchen and bathroom). They mainly take care of food themselves and make a lunch box for the workplace. The apartment has wifi and is situated in the city center. When they participate in camps and activities where food is served, they, like other participants, get food and can also take care of leftovers for their own part. Transport is daily done by bicycle or walking (most of the places are nearby) but sometimes with public transports or when it's needed, cars.

Training during the activity

The volunteers will train their project skills and continuously evaluate their learning together with the mentor; The volunteers will take part in on arrival training and midterm training arranged by the National Agency. During the year there will be different opportunities for lectures on studies depending on interests. The volunteers will learn how to be part of different projects and will be able to work with smaller and bigger projects depending on interests and skills. The language training will be in Swedish at OLS and in a study circle for practitioners.
