Supporting GOB's Environmental Education

Grup Balear d'Ornitologia i Defensa de la Naturalesa

Maó, Menorca, Spain

Description

This is a very good opportunity to introduction to working in the environmental third sector. The role consists of supporting environmental education activities, which take place in schools and outside of them on field trips. Some of these activities are related to the marine environment. Occasionally, you will also carry out tasks with the Wildlife Recovery Centre or in our nursery for sustainable gardening. During the school year (October-June), you will assist with environmental education courses in schools with activities, excursions, courses, workshops, etc. During the spring and summer, you will support other volunteers focused on the care of young birds and wild birds, as well as educational workshops for families at the Wildlife Recovery Centre. You will also collaborate with a group of children and young people on educational excursions in the natural environment (one outing per month) and at the summer camps we organise at the end of June and first half of July. T

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

You will be provided with shared accommodation with another CES volunteer in an appartment not far from the GOB office. You will be provided with a bicycle and can apply for a bus pass if you wish. You will receive a monthly living allowance to cover your living and food expenses.

Training during the activity

Volunteers will receive a training session on arrival covering introduction to the organization and the tasks to be carried out and will be accompanied throughout their voluntary experience. Additionally, GOB runs several training opportunities on environmental matters which are open to attend. The opportunity includes two possibilities of language courses at the Official School for Adults: Spanish and Catalan, depending on the volunteer’s level of this languages.

Participant profile

A scientific educational background and interest in nature, the sea and the outdoor will be valued. The volunteer should enjoy working in nature and be physically capable of doing easy to moderate outdoor work. The role also requires an interest and care towards animals and the desire to gain experience healing injured animals. A medium level of Spanish is required to be able to communicate with the supervisors and the organization staff, and it can be useful a good motivation to understand Catalan, witch is the language in the schools. A valid driving license is necessary for many of the organization’s activities. Overall we value a positive, proactive attitude and motivation to learn.
