Lucie from France During my volunteering exchange an Italian, a Bosnian and a French went hiking in the Estonian Forest. That day was our first walk in the Estonian forest. There is a special atmosphere in the vastness of these forests. Like any good Estonian, we ended our walk with a sauna. Before leaving France, I had no precise idea of what this country could look like. Now, I know that part of me is still there, a bit like if I had two homes. I would not have imagined that so much can happen in a year. All I can say is that I wish everyone to have this experience. Tatiana from Russia I live in Russia in the small town Glazov. My profession is a teacher of physics and computer science. It should be in the interest of its students, that a teacher has a broad outlook. So I want to travel, learn other cultures and countries. A volunteer camp provides the perfect opportunity to communicate with people of different nationalities, to learn their experiences and culture. Therefore, I participated in a volunteer camp in France. Our task was to restore an ancient wall. I learned to build the wall in the traditional manual way. I saw how much joy our work brought to local residents. As I was very serious and diligent about this work, our camp leader Jose praised me for the work. And at the end of the camp I received a diploma as the best volunteer.

Emmanuel from GermanyThis picture was shot during a night in Mersin, Turkey in August 2018, at one of the last natural beaches in the area. Our team of international volunteers spent most nights walking up and down the beach two protect the two endangered species of turtles nesting in the area from stray dogs. Naturally, most of the baby turtles are able to find the way to the sea on their own, guided by vibrations of the waves and the moon illuminating the white froth on the waves. Unfortunately, many of them head towards the lights of the city instead, where they are dried out by the sun the next morning. This is why we collected them and dropped them off near the water. It was always fascinating and magical to see how the babies manage to crawl out of a meter of sand their mother put on the nest to hide and protect the eggs, right after hatching. These two supported each other and took a well-deserved rest once they reached fresh air.

Şinda from Turkey I took the picture in the Tarlabasi Community Centre in 2018, where we designed together with other volunteers the content for the art atelier " Çok Güzel Atölye – Very beautiful atelier", which took place every day. I drew a cow and a rooster on a board. The kids, who participate in the atelier, also drew their own designs on a paper. My other volunteer friends helped the child with their drawings. Afterwards, we talked about the animals. Some children told about their experiences with animals, other kids imitated the sounds of the animals. Some children took their drawings home and others wanted to stick them to the wall. It was nice to see the imagination of all the kids. We had a marvellous time together.

Ginevra from Italy On 2 December 2018, ahead of the COP24 talks in Katowice, around 65,000 people and I wrote history by joining Belgium’s largest climate demonstration to demand climate justice and to call on the Belgian government to take further action to fight global warming. People of all ages, cultures, countries and walks of life, took to the streets in Brussels to wave placards, sing, dance and campaign to protect our planet. I marched to show my support for an ambitious and socially just climate policy in Belgium, to stand in solidarity with the Belgian people and to constructively vent against all the governments that are rolling back environmental rights. Despite the seriousness of the topic, the rain and wind, ‘Claim the Climate’ was a happy and cheerful gathering.
