Meet the Bauhaus in Kaunas (DiscoverEU meet up in Lithuania)

The New European Bauhaus initiative connects the European Green Deal to our daily lives and living spaces. It calls on all Europeans to imagine and build together a sustainable and inclusive future that is beautiful for our eyes, minds, and souls. About the initiative (europa.eu)

“Real is beatiful” boasts hosts in Lithuania that invite to discover authentic experiences involving modernist architecture and green, floating art galleries.

For two nights Kaunas - the heart of Lithuania and second largest city, that has just ended the title of “European Capital of Culture 2022” - will welcome the guests. The scene of 1920-1940’s modernist architecture that might enter the Unesco World Heritage List already this year will be on the focus while circling in the bicycle friendly city center. Period authentic cinematic experiences and Fluxus art (whose founder George Mačiūnas was born in Kaunas) approach will encourage the participants to review the New Bauhaus principles in the new light.

Kaunas, standing on the confluence of Nemunas and Neris, has been known for a long time not only as a trading spot with one of the largest Town Hall Squares, but also as defensive city, known for its XIX century’ ring of fortifications. To fill the second part of the day with adventures and relaxed opportunities for conversations, the participants will travel to Kaunas district star - Zapyškis town. Red brick Gothic church, a floating industrial heavy machinery converted to landscaped art gallery or local folk community center Stuba - will leave no neutral opinions. The final supper in Zapyškis will involve participatory elements to further bond the team of participants and make most of the time for learning and exchange of opinions.

20.00 - 22.00 Getting to know each other and cozy, stylish movie evening in Romuva

 

25^th of July: Exploring the new Bauhaus

 10.00 -12.00 Exploring Modernism in Kaunas on bicycles

12.30 Bus trip to Zapyškis (including lunch stop at old town in Kaunas)

15.00 -17.30 Picnic & free style excursions in Zapyškis

18.00- 20.00 Self-cooked dinner in Scena

21.00 Free evening to explore Kaunas

 

26th of July: next destination- Latvian MEETUP!

8.00 Bus to Riga

 

All inclusive: accommodation, food, program, and even a bus to Riga! Straight to Latvian and Estonian meet ups :)
