Explore how to respond to hate speech together with youth from across the globe

Join the new Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange online course: “Countering Hate Speech”, starting on May 18, 2020. An interactive course to explore questions like: What can be said about the impact of hate speech on people’s lives and societies at large? What can be done in response? Who decides what hate speech is? Where is the line between free speech and hate speech?
Difficult challenges linked to the COVID19 pandemic, have led to an increase in acts and displays of xenophobia, discrimination, violence and racism against people of different descents around the world. Course participants will have the chance to discuss the current situation and to get insights on the definition and regulation of hate speech, often perceived as controversial to many.
In small culturally diverse groups, participants get to discuss online and exchange opinions based on their own knowledge and experience.
“What I liked most was exchanging ideas and learning about the different realities in our countries” - 2019 participant
“I learned that what I might see as a hate speech would not have that same impact for others and vice versa” - 2019 participant
Conversations happening in the online group meetings are generally inspired by an original lecture series with audio-visual materials from expert practitioners. With the help of certified dialogue facilitators, participants dive into the subject matter and learn with and from their fellow group members.
Not only do participants engage in dialogue around the topic, but also collaboratively work towards creating a campaign to counter hate speech. This assignment offers participants the chance to bring into practice what they are learning and discussing throughout the course. Past participants have made different types of campaigns using social media, producing videos or websites to raise awareness about a topic of their choice linked to the course theme.
“I learned how I can focus on solutions rather than get stuck on negative thoughts” - 2019 participant
‘Countering Hate Speech’ is a 5 week paced English course where participants are expected to interact and meet weekly requirements to receive an Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange open badge.
