EURES Targeted Mobility Scheme

The European Targeted Mobility Scheme (TMS) is a European Union job mobility scheme which offers financial assistance to EU citizens aged 18+ who are relocating for work or travelling to an interview in another EU country, Norway, or Iceland.

European Employment Service

The EURES Network was established by the European Commission to help European citizens find work in another country of the European Union (EU) / European Economic Area (EEA). EURES Ireland has a network of EURES advisers, who can give you information and advice on your job search in Europe and help you to contact European employers. They can also give you more general practical information on living and working conditions in another EU/EEA country, for example social security, information on pay levels, taxes, recruitment practices or provide pre-departure and on arrival advice.

The Directorate of Labour

The Directorate of Labour has information on working in Iceland, the paperwork necessary and counselling services. European citizens do not need a visa or permit to work in Iceland but they must obtain an Icelandic ID number.

Your rights as a worker in Iceland

Workers from the member states of EU and EFTA (EEA) have the right to work in Iceland and do not need residence- or work permit. They must however apply for an ID number and register their domicile in Iceland. For further information see www.skra.is. Citizens from outside the EEA must have work- and residence permit before they start working in Iceland. Trade unions negotiate collective agreements for wages and other employment terms of wage earners. According to Icelandic law, collective agreements as negotiated by the trade unions and employers organisationns apply as minimum terms in the Icelandic labour market, irrespective of gender, nationality or duration of employment, for all wage earners in the profession in question. Contracts of employment between individual wage earners and employers stipulating poorer employment terms than those provided for in the collective agreements are invalid.
