Youth mainstreaming

Youth mainstreaming is about integrating a youth perspective into the preparation, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all policies and programmes that concern and affect young people.

How to include a youth perspective in EU policymaking?

The 2022 European Year of Youth set youth participation as a central priority of EU action in the field of youth and gave a voice to young people who expressed the need to include a youth perspective in all areas relevant to young people.

Introducing a ‘youth check’

A key outcome of the European Year of Youth is the introduction of a ‘youth check’, which will use existing Better Regulation and consultation tools to guarantee the youth dimension in all relevant policy areas.

There will be four key phases in a ‘youth check’:

1. Assessing youth relevance  >  2. Youth consultation  > 3. Impact assessment  >  4. Scrutiny – the Regulatory Scrutiny Board
