SPJ/Entreville

Entreville asbl

Lobbes, Belgium

Description

Voluntary service in a children's home, hosting 15 children and adolescents (from 4 to 17 yo) placed in care by a judge. The volunteer will be integrated into and support the educational team on site by proposing various activities to the children and accompanying them in their daily lives. These are mainly small things that the volunteer will be able to put in place, but they are very valuable for the children and young people. For example: helping with homework, accompanying a child to football, introducing sending country, etc. helping with meals, assisting the educational team with everyday tasks..These children come from difficult family situations and can sometimes display unusual behaviour. The volunteer will have the opportunity to bond with these kids, to help them grow and discover new things, to widen their horizons, in many and varied ways, big and small. This provides an opportunity to learn and a fulfilling experience for all the kids, the team and the volunteer.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteer will have a room in the children's home. He or she will have meals with the children and the educational team and will have food available on days when he or she is not active in the house. They will also be able to cook if they wish. The hosting organisation is responsible for all costs for food and lodging. There is a railway station nearby (15 minutes' walk) with easy access to Charleroi and Brussels. Belgium being a small country, there are a lot of opportunities to travel around and public transport is relatively cheap.

Training during the activity

The volunteer will take part in seminars organised by the coordinating organisation (+/-15 days divided into 4 sessions) as well as the 2 seminars organised by the Belgian national agency. Within the project, the volunteer will have a mentor and a "buddy" who will be available for more specific questions concerning the service in the local project. The volunteering period begins with a welcome seminar for all the SPJ volunteers at the beginning of September and ends at the end of June. The volunteer may attend in-person French lessons (if available) or with a private teacher if necessary.

Participant profile

Someone who wants to get involved in a social project with children in care. As the project is conducted in French, the volunteer must be willing to learn the language. To this end, they will be able to take French courses.
