Description

Vin is a day center for people with mental health issues located in Reykjavik and operated by the Municipality of Reykjavík. Its aim is to socially integrate otherwise isolated people struggling with mental illness, to help them change their routines and add something extra to their lives, thus strengthening their physiological, physical and sociological well-being and improving their quality of life. Furthermore, the aim is to help the guests to improve/develop various skills through participation in daily activities. As a volunteer one of your main tasks will be to spend time with the guests, getting to know them, chatting, and engaging them in different activities. Cooking (about two hours preparation),Organizing and participating in the activities of the day, etc.You will be asked to join the staff in some extra activities, like going for a walk or visiting a museum (occasionally). In this project the volunteer's ideas, skills, and initiatives will be welcomed.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteer will live in our volunteer house in the centre of Reykjavik together with 6-7 other international volunteers all working at different projects. The volunteers each have their own private bedroom, then share a kitchen, bathrooms and living room. Food and pocket money allocation as well as bus card for Reykjavik for the whole year included.Please note that generic applications will not be considered. Training during the activity

The volunteers get languages classes and are trained in the project for project relevant skills. On arrival and mid term training are organised by the National Agency of Iceland and are compulsory. AUS Iceland also organises a short introduction training at arrival. Please note that generic applications will not be considered. Participant profile

We are looking for individuals who are: flexible, open minded, independent, motivated, patient, caring, teamworker and empathetic. The volunteer must be mature, outgoing and willing to work with people who struggle with mental illnesses and social isolation. The volunteer can intiate their own project based on his/her/their interest or skills. In the past volunteers have offered language classes, started a book club, nature walk and various arts and crafts. The role of the volunteer will be based on his/her/their strength and interest. But its important that the volunteer is open and a caring friend for the all those using the Daycentre. Please note that generic applications will not be considered.
