Description
The JRS Greece volunteer program with offers an opportunity to young volunteers to make a meaningful impact in the lives of urban asylum seekers and refugees in Athens. Volunteers will work primarily in Victoria Square and the surrounding neighborhoods, where JRS runs several projects designed to support newly arrived refugees and migrants on their path towards integration and self-sufficiency. Volunteers will be involved in various initiatives aimed at facilitating social inclusion, education, and empowerment, including working at our social integration centres, supporting women and children, and assisting in the distribution of essential goods to vulnerable communities. This hands-on experience provides volunteers with the chance to work directly with people from diverse backgrounds while learning about the challenges faced by refugees and migrants in Greece.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
JRS Greece ESC program will support for Travel arrangements (including briefing on visa, vaccinations, insurance, local transport upon arrival in Athens). At date of arrival, welcome and reception by Volunteer Coordinator and Mentor at JRS Greece office. Accommodation to be find before departure, either provided by JRS communities, or individually found with the support of JRS Greece. Volunteers hosted by JRS Greece will sign a contract, clarification of bank account for stipend, a ticket for monthly local transport. The volunteers will receive regular pay out of stipend e.g. pocket money.
Training during the activity
JRS will provide to volunteers training at the start of the program. This training covers key topics, such as understanding the refugee situation in Greece, working in a cross-cultural environment, and best practices for supporting vulnerable groups in activities like: Registration of beneficiaries, arranging appointments. Giving language lessons and workshops for women and children. Offering music, arts and crafts class. Welcoming the beneficiaries. Ongoing support and guidance are provided throughout the volunteer's stay, including regular meetings with a volunteer coordinator.
Participant profile
Between 18 and 29 years old (signing the volunteer agreement before your 30th birthday). From an eligible country of the ESC program. Interest in working with refugees and people from diverse cultures. Ability to speak and write in English (working language is English); other European languages are welcome. Experience in volunteering and working as part of a team. Experience in education, working with refugees or vulnerable groups, or cross-cultural environments is an asset. Ability to speak and write in English – The language communication with the team is English. Any foreign language is welcome! An openness to learn, work in a multicultural environment, and support JRS’s mission of accompaniment and service to marginalized groups.
