Staakentreff Obstallee " Intercultural Dialogue"

Gemeinwesenverein Heerstraße Nord e.V.

Berlin, Germany

Description

Our neighborhood center is called ‘Staakentreff Obstallee’. It is located in the heart of the ‘Heerstraße Nord’ high-rise housing estate on the western outskirts of Berlin. The residents are very committed, multicultural, relatively young, and low-income. Our building has various counseling services: Social counseling, tenancy law counseling, migration counseling, etc. Various groups also meet on the premises: language learning courses, neighborhood café, tenant initiatives, Arabic lessons, women's groups, etc. In addition, we work in and with the neighborhood on its issues as part of our community work: Littering, problems with deaf people, housing problems, racism, (international) meeting opportunities, intercultural festivals, exercise programs, etc. We always try to give residents an active role and encourage them to organize themselves. Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

For volunteers who will participate in the project for up to one year, we organize accommodation where each will have a single room. This can be in a free room in a neighboring shared apartment or in private accommodation with families. Each volunteer receives both food and pocket money. They will also get a monthly ticket for the AB area in Berlin.

Training during the activity

Volunteers will join EU seminars, and learn their rights and responsibilities while sharing experiences with peers. Initially, we focused on community integration, enrolling them in a basic German language school for two months. We then strongly encourage participation in European Solidarity Corps' German language courses. Volunteers actively engage in events, workshops, and citizen initiatives, gaining insights into our operations. Emphasizing skill development, we encourage each volunteer to explore new abilities and invite them to realize one of their ideas in the neighborhood.

Participant profile

We welcome individuals of any gender, educational background, or nationality. We are seeking motivated, open-minded and empathetic young people to join our team. Proficiency in German or English AND Turkish or Bulgarian is mandatory. A motivation letter specifically addressing our project is required. Additional points in favor include prior experience working with older adults or youth, organizing events and self- administration. Crafting skills and knowledge about pigeon breeding are a bonus, but the foremost criterion is motivation. Share with us why you aspire to be part of our project, and what unique qualities you bring with you?
