Working With People and Volunteering Adventure in České Budějovice

Diecézní charita České Budějovice

České Budějovice, Czech Republic

Description

Diocesan Charity České Budějovice (further simply DCHCB) provides support, coordination and methodical assistance to 13 local Charities. The Centre of DCHCB provides its own social services (including the Volunteer Centre) and participates in other projects in the Diocese of České Budějovice as well as abroad. The project supported by the European Solidarity Corps enables us to host foreign volunteers who can participate in four volunteering activities. These activities focus on four target groups: 1) support of older people and people with disabilities, 2) support of homeless people, 3) work with children and youth in the programme Young Caritas, 4) helping people who have been affected by a natural disaster or war. Our activities are opened to all young people (volunteers) including those with fewer opportunities. We want to support the interest in the social issue of multiculturalism and aim to break down the dysfunctional stereotypes in society.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Accomodation for volunteers is guaranteed. We provide accomodation in dormitories for young people or in private appartments. The volunteer will have his/her own room with a shared kitchen and bathroom. The volunteer can cook his/her own meals or during the school year there is an opportunity to eat in the cafeteria. Concerning transportation, public transport is available. The town České Budějovice is also ideal for cycling. We are prepared to help with purchaising a bike.

Training during the activity

The educational plan will include: 1) introduction training lead by our staff, 2) Czech language course, 3) the course called „Setkání s charitou“ (DCHCB organizes this course several times a year), 4) digital literacy issues (using digital tools/methods every day), 5) training connected with European Solidarity Corps (National Agency), 5) goals from the volunteer‘s perspective (connected to the key competences of the volunteer). The core of the training will be the everyday interaction with our target groups. Volunteers will develop their communication, manual, language and other soft skills.

Participant profile

We focus on the individual volunteering, hosting the volunteers from abroad and their engagement in the standard activities, we offer. Mainly we would like to seek for someone who is willing to support older people and people with disabilities, possibly also work with children, support homeless people and people affected by natural distasters or war (currently Ukrainian refugees). A prerequisite for the work of volunteer is communicativeness and at least a basic knowledge of English. All the activities are also suitable for young people with fewer opportunities (not suitable for wheelchair users). Working with homeless people is not suitable for persons to whom their physical handicap does not allow physical work associated with the cleaning of public spaces.
