Description

APRODEH has a long-standing commitment to defending and promoting human rights in Peru. The volunteer will help promote the right to a life free from violence and discrimination for women and girls in Apurímac, providing emotional support to survivors and engaging in advocacy efforts to hold the State accountable and encourage civic commitment. They will participate in gender-based violence prevention workshops for teachers and students in Abancay and support legal training sessions aimed at forming a network of pro bono lawyers for survivors of sexual violence. They will assist in healing activities rooted in community, decolonial, and feminist perspectives, working closely with women’s organizations, feminist groups, and LGBTIQ+ collectives to strengthen their strategic and political capacities. Additionally, the volunteer will participate in activities requiring short trips to Cusco and Apurímac provinces to support outreach efforts and community engagement.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteer will be based in the city of Abancay, the regional capital, where the regional headquarters of APRODEH is located. From there she will travel with the team to the interior of the region and to Cusco. In Apurímac she will carry out her work with greater emphasis in the cities of Abancay and Andahuaylas according to the established schedule. Private accommodation with the necessary conditions (single bedroom with key, access to individual or shared bathroom, living-dining room, kitchen, laundry, internet), close to the office, funded by the project, as food, transport, etc.

Training during the activity

The volunteer will have diverse learning opportunities, gaining first-hand insight into the realities of rural and urban Andean women and LBTIQ+ people in Apurímac. They will explore strategies for empowerment and advocacy at personal, collective, and political levels. Learning will occur through readings, healing spaces, network coordination, and advocacy efforts. Engaging with a cohesive, experienced team in gender issues and environmental defense, they will navigate cultural differences, fostering both professional growth and a deeper understanding of Andean perspectives +Language course.

Participant profile

The volunteer will support collective healing strategies for survivors of sexual violence from a feminist perspective. Experience in psychology is valued, as well as knowledge of gender and intersectional approaches. An interest or experience in feminist activism is appreciated. Fluency in spoken and written Spanish is required. Previous volunteer experience, strong teamwork skills, social sensitivity, empathy, and organizational abilities are important. Experience in information analysis and synthesis is ideal. Knowledge of the Peruvian or Latin American context is a plus.
