UGANDA PIONEERS ASSOCIATION
KAMPALA, Uganda
Description
Team SOLARIC - IOA, BG and Cazalla Intercultural, ES - is looking to recruit 4 individuals on a 6-month volunteering mission supporting families with children with special needs in Uganda. The host - Uganda Pioneers Association (UPA) - collaborates with 2 community services in Nansana division - Centre for Special Abilities (CeSA) and Doreah Child Care Uganda (DCCU). Team SOLARIC wishes to contribute to a society in which children with special needs can grow and develop to their full potential for independent living. The volunteers will contribute in different educational and leisure activities, e.g. preparing materials for the learning process, assisting with indoor and outdoor games, engaging children with enjoyable literature – reading, storytelling and writing, and organizing music, dance and drama workshops, as well as arts and crafts sessions. CeSA works with dyslexic children, DCCU with children with sensory and mobility impairments. 2 volunteers will help each center.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
The SOLARIC volunteers will be accommodated in a shared furnished flat in close proximity to the service centers. The flat provides shared bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and common area. There is a washing machine, too. Initially, volunteers will be assisted by UPA team in grocery shopping and are expected subsequently to manage their own food allowance. Volunteers will take care of their own meals. Volunteers can walk, use a taxi or the famous boda boda (hired motorcycles) daily to and from the service centers.
Training during the activity
The successful volunteers will receive pre-departure training delivered online by team SOLARIC. Upon arrival in Uganda they will join a 2-day orientation session with UPA and a subsequent 1-day mid-term online sessions with the project team. At the CeSA/DCCU each pair of volunteers will get additional instructions on how to approach and engage the children taking into consideration their learning needs and abilities. Volunteers can be invited to deliver sessions on community mobilization for sensitization and promotion of children’s health while advocating for their rights.
