Description

Mano a Mano is a Peruvian non-governmental organization committed to improving living conditions in vulnerable communities through environmental, social, and urban development initiatives. Since 2007, the organization has built over 6,000m² of parks in Los Jazmines, Vista Alegre, and Cerrito la Libertad, contributing to violence reduction and enhanced community well-being. Throughout this mission, the volunteer will support community engagement and environmental development efforts by: 

- Documenting best practices for park construction and maintenance through interviews and consultations; 

- Organizing workshops to assess the impact of green spaces on public safety, food security, and environmental well-being; 

- Producing an impact report (qualitative/quantitative) on how parks and access roads influence human rights and community life;

- Proposing improvements for future interventions; Strengthening partnerships with municipal services for park maintenance; 

- Participating in construction and education activities.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteer is offered a room in Volunteer House which is in the same building as the office. Each one have their seperate room, which could be shared depending on availability. Lunch is provided on office days, and a menu is also available in the field. Public transport is used to travel to the site. The NGO location is around 1,5h away from the centre of Lima and volunteers can visit the capital on the weekends, but they are mostly living in the community and have to follow the local environement rules.

Training during the activity

Volunteers will receive initial training on arrival, accompanied by a welcome and orientation to the project. A weekly follow-up will be carried out to support them in their work. In addition, they will be trained in the management of green areas in urban environments, guided by an employee of the association with more than 20 years of experience. They will also work in collaboration with civil engineers and architects in the planning and creation of new parks. At the end of their mission, a closing evaluation will be carried out.

Participant profile

Candidates must be 18 to 35 years old, reside in one of the eligible countries (EU Member State, North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Turkey), have completed the compulsory Humanitarian Aid Volunteering training and not have participated before in individual Humanitarian Aid Volunteering. When adding together this new volunteering opportunity and any previous participation in EU volunteering programmes, the total duration cannot exceed 12 months. We are looking for volunteers who are committed and passionate about sustainable development and community work. Ideally, we are looking for people with the following profile: 

- Experience in agrology, agricultural training, agricultural engineering or ecological and environmental development: 

- Knowledge of agro-ecological practices, development of urban or rural gardens, sustainable management of natural resources; 

- Experience in volunteering: having participated in solidarity projects, either in NGOs, community programmes or social initiatives would be a plus; 

- Experience in community life and teamwork: having been part of groups such as the scout movement, summer camps, collaborative projects, teamwork with coexistence dynamics would be a plus.
