Disability TEAMS project at Villaggio Marino - Ca’ Roman, Venice, Italy

XENA CENTRO SCAMBI E DINAMICHE INTERCULTURALI

Ca' Roman - Venice, Italy

Description

The TEAMS will take place at “Villaggio Marino di Ca’ Roman”, an association born with the goal of contributing to the hospitality of families and people with disabilities. This is achieved by offering summer stays where families find support and comfort for their loved ones, who are carefully assisted by our volunteers. The island of Ca’ Roman offers large green spaces near an unspoiled beach, and is a protected natural oasis overseen by LIPU (Italian League for Bird Protection). Volunteers Tasks: • Assist guests with disabilities in their primary needs: helping and supporting the person with disabilities with showering, using the restroom, during mealtimes and eating, dressing, and taking care of personal belongings. Building a relationship is the foundation of everything. • Presence and attention during movements outside the village • Care for and clean common areas • Set up the beach area • Manage the laundry • Propose simple entertainment activities

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Volunteers will live inside the village and will share bedrooms and bathrooms with other volunteers. Rooms will accommodate 3 to 4 people. Bed linens and towels are provided, while volunteers must bring their own personal hygiene products. Rooms and bathrooms must be kept clean and tidy by the volunteers themselves. Laundry facilities are available at the association’s premises for washing clothes. Meals are provided by the kitchen at scheduled times. If volunteers need to purchase personal supplies or other necessities, it is possible to do so during group outings.

Participant profile

The volunteer profile includes: - Willingness to share part of one’s daily life with the resident community and guests, while also enjoying some moments of privacy; - open-mindedness towards encountering new situations and people; - a flexible approach to work regarding tasks and schedules, which may change even at short notice; - and willingness to learn basic Italian to communicate with people who do not speak English. We value a high level of motivation to experience communal living and sharing with all members of the village, along with consistent commitment. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to propose evening activities related to their country of origin (such as films, photos, music, dance) and offer practical workshops to share their skills with the community (such as crafts). Volunteers should aim to develop attitudes suited to community life, such as sharing spaces, ideas, and communication. Efforts to adopt an inclusive approach towards people with disabilities are highly appreciated. Given the wild nature of the island environment, it is expected that the volunteer will have a respect for and interest in natural places, valuing their preservation and mindful enjoyment.
