Organic Vegetable Garden at Sonnenwald Community

GEN-Deutschland - Netzwerk für Gemeinschaften e.V.

Gemeinschaft Sonnenwald Schernbach eG

Schernbach Seewald, Germany

Description

Tending our garden both outside and in the greenhouses will be your daily task. The garden team grows about 50 different types of vegetables, fruit and herbs for the community. As you start in spring, you will experience a full growing season, starting seedling under the grow lights, preparing the soil, planting out, weeding and harvesting. You will learn to use a variety of tools and growing techniques. In the market garden with its smaller scale, most of the work is done with traditional hand tools. No big machines are used there. If you like spending your time outdoors, getting your hands dirty and having a full body workout, this placement would be for you.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Vegan and vegetarian food is provided. There's living quarters shared with other volunteers including a shared kitchen and all the community facilities. You will be part of the group of young volunteers, trainees and interns sharing your own living space with a kitchen. It is situated in a wing of our largest residential building. One evening per week a team of experienced facilitators will offer time and space in order to get to know each other. They will help you develop a set of skills for working on communication and inner processes.

Training during the activity

German classes will be provided as needed. Two mandatory trainings are organised by the German National Agency, an On-Arrival and Mid-Term training. You'll be able to to meet other volunteers from all over Germany. You are free to choose your own project, using your creativity and skills. The project should have either a direct link to sustainability or a clear solidarity aspect (e.g. working with children or young people from the surrounding villages). It is a great opportunity to try something unrelated to your work experience and to expand your individual skills.

Participant profile

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in sustainability and community living in a rural location. You're open to learn and meet new people as well as motivated to work in the community (permaculture, garden, park, seminar house, café). We're looking forward to hearing from you.
