Eco-Cultural Hub
KINONIKI SYNETAIRISTIKI EPICHIRISI SYLLOGIKIS KE KINONIKIS OFELEIAS APANO MERIA SYROU
Ermoupoli, Greece
Description
Syros hosts a variety of endangered species and culturally significant sites that are threatened by climate change, lack of knowledge and limited awareness about environmental sustainability and its interconnectedness with cultural heritage. The Eco-cultural Hub focuses on environmental conservation, cultural heritage preservation, and citizen science research. Volunteers will actively engage in scientific research by collecting data related to flora and fauna, ecosystemic characteristics, climate change, and cultural heritage elements. Through these tasks, volunteers play a vital role in preserving and protecting local ecosystems, and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Volunteers will also contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage through archival research, and community engagement events. By promoting awareness of cultural landmarks and local traditions, volunteers help preserve the cultural identity of the community and promote intercultural understanding.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
For the duration of their participation in the activity, volunteers' accommodation, food and transportation to outdoor activities will be fully taken care of by the organization. Volunteers will be hosted at Apano Meria’s Research Base, in the port town of Ermoupoli. They will stay in shared rooms with access to a common kitchen, bathrooms, garden and communal living spaces. Although public transport is available, electric bicycles are provided to explore the island of Syros.
Training during the activity
Through Eco-Cultural Hub volunteers will develop a diverse range of skills, including environmental conservation techniques, cultural heritage preservation methods, scientific research methodologies, and community engagement strategies, enhancing their practical capabilities and expertise. They will gain valuable hands-on experience in real-world settings, providing them with practical insights and knowledge that cannot be obtained through theoretical learning alone. Finally, they activity cultivates a sense of global citizenship and a deep sense of responsibility towards the planet.
