Description

The volunteer will support Friends of the Earth Malta’s Food, Agriculture and Biodiversity (FAB) campaign, which promotes fair and sustainable food systems, biodiversity protection, and nature-based solutions. The role combines research, policy advocacy, communications, and hands-on community activities. The volunteer will assist with public consultations, educational resources, community gardens, citizen science activities, and engagement with farmers, stakeholders, and partner organisations. The experience offers insight into how food systems, agriculture, biodiversity, and environmental justice intersect at local, national, and EU levels, while encouraging active citizenship and grassroots environmental action. ***** For more information and to apply: https://foemalta.org/vacancies/2026-01/*****

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteer will be accommodated in a shared apartment close to Friends of the Earth Malta’s offices in Floriana. All basic living costs, including rent, electricity, water, gas, and internet, will be covered. A monthly food allowance will be provided in line with European Solidarity Corps rules. Travel costs to and from Malta will be reimbursed up to the ESC limit. Local transport related to volunteering activities will be supported. The volunteer will also receive private Henner insurance for the full duration of the activity.

Training during the activity

The volunteer will receive on-the-job training through daily collaboration with campaign staff and regular mentoring from the FAB Campaign Coordinator. Training will cover environmental advocacy, research methods, policy analysis, community engagement, and campaign communications. The volunteer will also participate in ESC-related trainings, including on-arrival and mid-term training sessions organised by the National Agency. Additional learning opportunities may include workshops, network meetings, and skill-sharing sessions within the Friends of the Earth Europe network.

Participant profile

The participant is a young person interested in food systems, agriculture, biodiversity, or nature protection, who is motivated to contribute to environmental and social justice. They are curious, proactive, and open to learning about policy advocacy, research, and community-based action. The participant enjoys working both outdoors and at a desk, and is comfortable supporting a variety of activities, from research and writing to hands-on gardening and public events. Previous experience is not required, but an interest in sustainability, teamwork, and community engagement is essential. The participant is willing to take initiative while also working collaboratively within a small team.
