Conservation opportunity in Western Uganda
VIATORES CHRISTI COMPANY LIMITED BY GUARANTEE
Hoima , Uganda
Description
The volunteer sent by ASPEm Italy will work on the AVCA (Amplifying Voice for Climate Action) project. This is an ESC Humanitarian Aid initiative in Uganda, hosted by VC Uganda with the Justice and Peace Commission Hoima and the Bulindi Chimpanzee and Community Project. Hoima faces environmental pressures from population growth, oil development, deforestation, and habitat loss, affecting local livelihoods and biodiversity. Volunteers support environmental education, tree planting, habitat restoration, conservation awareness, and sustainable agriculture in schools, communities, and conservation areas. Typical work is Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week, combining fieldwork, engagement, and reflection. The project aims to strengthen environmental awareness, foster practical climate action, support locally led sustainable development, and promote intercultural learning between volunteers and host communities. Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Volunteers will have a private room at the Millennium Demonstration Hotel in Hoima, within a Catholic mission compound. A daily food allowance of €5 and pocket money of €15 are provided. Transport includes airport pickup and local arrangements to project activities. Activities take place in Hoima town and nearby communities, schools, and conservation sites. A 21:00 curfew applies, and the accommodation maintains a no alcohol, no drugs, no smoking, and no unauthorized visitors policy. Volunteers are supported by host mentors, an in-country coordinator, and the Sending Organisation.
Training during the activity
The volunteer will participate in in-person pre-departure training in Milan Italy. Upon arrival in Uganda, they will receive additional training as part of the organization’s welcome protocol: introduction to the team; orientation on VC Uganda to explain its objectives and projects; visits to the communities to meet direct collaborators; and an introduction to the local context and daily life. Volunteers will also receive structured training on safeguarding, environmental education, community engagement, climate justice, and sustainable development. They gain practical skills in conservation.
