CRECER - Supporting schools and communities in Nuevo Chimbote
UNITED SOCIETIES OF BALKANS
BRIGADA DE VOLUNTARIOS BOLIVARIANOS DEL PERU
LIMA, Peru
Description
Volunteers will collaborate in vulnerable communities in District of Nuevo Chimbote, in Ancash region in Peru. Under the management of the Brigada de Voluntarios Bolivarianos del Perú, project volunteers work directly with communities of 3 de Octubre and Primero de Mayo. They will work alongside educators, families, and local youth volunteers to create learning spaces based on mutual respect. Activities will be developed in partnership with the educational institutions Fe y Alegría N° 14 and César Vallejo. Volunteers will provide academic reinforcement in reading, writing and mathematics and support in Physical Education and Art classes. Through SkillsBoost methodology, focused on non-formal education, they will lead emotional well-being workshops to help young people identify their feelings, as well as social theater activities, collective murals, and creative reading clubs. Core component of the project is youth empowerment and leadership collaborating with the community.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Volunteers will stay in a house located in the 3 de Octubre community, specifically on the second floor. The apartment features three fully equipped bedrooms, and you will have access to a complete kitchen, a bathroom, a washing machine, hot water, a furnished living room, and WiFi. The house is strategically located on one of the main avenues of Nuevo Chimbote, just 5 minutes away from the project sites. Additionally, it is close to the local community market and supermarkets, and only a 5-minute walk from the city center.
Training during the activity
During orientation days we will provide volunteers with basic training on the local context, culture and rules of coexistence in order to facilitate their proper integration into the community. We will also address key aspects such as safety, health and risk management, as well as present the CRECER project objectives, roles of volunteers and the approach to work with vulnerable communities. We will carry out practical activities such as workshops, simulations and community visits. During their stay, volunteers will also receive 30 hours of Spanish classes to strengthen their integration.
Participant profile
Volunteers must be between 18 and 35 years old and demonstrate a genuine interest and real motivation to contribute to the project's activities. Applicants must have successfully completed the preparatory training on humanitarian aid organized by EACEA and meet the participation requirements established in the program's regulations. We are looking for participants with a sincere interest and real motivation to contribute to social development in vulnerable communities. The ideal profile includes previous experience or a strong desire to work with children and youth through non-formal education methods that foster creativity, expression, and participatory learning. It is essential that volunteers are willing to work in marginalized communities, supporting actions that boost local development in sectors such as 3 de Octubre and Primero de Mayo. Regarding communication, an acceptable level of English is required as the primary tool for initial coordination. While knowledge of Spanish is valued, it is not an indispensable requirement, as the project will provide language courses before and during the stay. However, applicants are expected to be highly motivated to reach at least a basic level of Spanish, which will be essential for their daily tasks and for achieving effective and close communication with the children and the local population of Nuevo Chimbote. A core component of the project is youth empowerment and leadership. In collaboration with local youth and community leaders, volunteers will participate in the design of community projects, such as reforestation days and the use of multi-purpose centers for cultural and solidarity activities. This human exchange seeks to bridge inequality gaps, strengthen mental health, and build a solid network of resilience and international solidarity to transform the reality of the zone of Nuevo Chimbote. Volunteers should be aware and ready to contribute to this effort. Pre-departure preparation will be implemented by United Societies of Balkans (Greece), coordinating organisation of the project, and sending partners Scambieuropei and AIPC Pandora, who will also be active in the recruitment. In addition, they should be aware of the 12-month ESC participation limit rule which applies for all ESC projects.
