Empowering Communities through Health and Gender Equality
NGO MONDO
KONGO COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION
BOLGATANGA, Ghana
Description
Kongo Community Development Association (KoCDA), a community-based organisation in Kongo, Upper East, Ghana, is seeking a European volunteer to support health initiatives and gender equality in the Nabdam district. The region faces serious challenges, including high maternal mortality, teenage pregnancy, unequal access to health services, and limited access for young people to accurate information on sexual and reproductive health, mental health, rights, and gender equality. Girls face higher dropout rates due to persistent preference for boys’ education, while women remain underrepresented in decision-making and have less access to education, land, income, and leadership opportunities. The volunteer will support community education, youth empowerment, and advocacy to improve health awareness, promote gender equality, and strengthen inclusive participation and resilience.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Volunteers stay at NDAHA Guesthouse in a private lockable room with toilet, shower, fan, running water, and electricity. A shared kitchen and fridge are available. The guesthouse is a 5-minute walk from the village centre, and the KoCDA ICT Centre is 7 minutes away. The area is warm, with reliable mobile service and good internet. Local buses to Bolgatanga run frequently. Kongo has a market every third day plus daily kiosks, while Bolgatanga offers more shops and food options. Volunteers may also try traditional Ghanaian dishes and seasonal local fruits and vegetables.
Training during the activity
Volunteers receive structured training from KoCDA on health promotion, gender equality, youth engagement, and communication with schools and community groups. Orientation introduces the local community, KoCDA’s mission, and the social and cultural context of Ghana’s Upper East Region. Throughout the placement, volunteers benefit from hands-on guidance, reflection meetings, and mentoring. They may also join local language classes and intercultural activities. This opportunity is part of the RISE project, promoting inclusion and empowerment in vulnerable communities.
Participant profile
Candidates must be 18 to 35 years old, reside in one of the eligible countries (EU Member State, North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Turkey), have completed the compulsory Humanitarian Aid Volunteering training and not have participated before in individual Humanitarian Aid Volunteering. When adding together this new volunteering opportunity and any previous participation in EU volunteering programmes, the total duration cannot exceed 12 months. Previous experience in health initiatives and gender equality activities is a bonus.
