Environment and digital skills volunteer
NGO MONDO
CIVS COMMUNITY SERVICE
NAIROBI, Kenya
Description
The project promotes economic and environmental sustainability by strengthening farmer incomes, improving food security and nutrition, and increasing resilience to social, economic, and environmental stresses. Volunteers work in resource centres, model farms, and directly with small-scale farmers to support sustainable agriculture, climate adaptation, and income diversification. Activities include soil conservation, reduced pesticide use, soil regeneration, and vertical vegetable gardening as practical responses to food insecurity. The project also strengthens farmers’ digital skills through simple record-keeping, invoicing, and the use of weather forecasting and mobile advisory tools to support better planning and decision-making. In environmental conservation, volunteers support tree planting, nursery management, and seedling distribution with schools, community leaders, and women’s and youth groups, contributing to ecological restoration and stronger local ownership.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Our volunteers will be accommodated either in a volunteer house or in a rented space near the project location. In the accommodation, water and electricity will be available. The volunteer will be required to bring a sleeping bag, mosquito net and pillow. Kindly pay attention to the things you should bring to make your accommodation more comfortable. Volunteers will cook their breakfast and dinner and lunch will be eaten at the working sites. Transportation to and from the projects will be either by walking or using moto bikes.
Training during the activity
Volunteers will receive orientation on the project’s mission, expectations, local community, and project site, as well as preparation from the coordinating team after arrival in Kenya. They can also take part in local language classes, intercultural activities, three-sided mentoring, and pre-departure training. This opportunity is part of the RISE project, through which volunteers support inclusion, empowerment, and capacity building in vulnerable communities while developing transversal and intercultural skills.
