Youth work in Tampere, 6-12 months
City of Tampere, Youth Services
Tampere, Finland
Description
We at Tampere Youth Services are looking for two volunteers for a 6–12-month period. The starting date and the total length of the period can be negotiated. Tampere Youth Services is the main provider of youth work in the city of Tampere. We provide activities for youth between 9-29 years, mostly in their free time. The volunteers will work mostly at their individual ‘home base’ youth centres. The tasks include organizing and carrying out activities for youth at youth centres, events, and other youth work locations, as well as updating our Instagram account. We are looking for volunteers to: 1. a local youth centre: we value knowledge and experience of sports and physical activities 2. the cultural youth centre: we expect an interest and/or skills in creative methods, such as arts, crafts, media, and music The volunteering project includes work in the evenings and on weekends, still in total 5 days / week. You will work closely with other volunteers and youth workers.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
You will share a student apartment with our other volunteer/s. The apartment has a shared kitchen and bathroom/toilet, but you have your own room. You will also have access to a common room and sauna. The apartment is in the city with good access to public transportation. We will cover your public transportation during your volunteering project, by giving you a local Nysse-card to use for buses and trams. We will give you a limited S-business card, which you can use for your grocery shoppings. You will also be given pocket money for 7e / day throughout your volunteering period.
Training during the activity
You will learn about Finnish youth work with the support of professionals. You will get to set your own learning goals based on individual needs and strengths. The goals and learning opportunities can relate to for example: - the local municipal youth work - new methods, planning and preparing activities - working with groups of different ages, backgrounds, nationalities - developing skills in leading and life-management - strengthening your language and communication skills - learning new things about yourself - the Finnish culture, language and society
Participant profile
We are looking for open minded persons, who have the confidence or at least are eager to meet new people, especially young people. We appreciate enthusiasm and willingness to engage with the local youth community. It requires sometimes a rather self-confident and self-imposed approach. The youth centre where the volunteer will work is culturally rich. Therefore, it is considered an advantage, if you know other languages than English. The volunteers can plan and carry out activities based on their own strengths and interests, for example hobby clubs, nature and adventure activities, music, art, games, and sports. We are looking for volunteers who want to learn about youth work and its forms, as well as to gain working and volunteering experience with youth. You don’t need to have experience of working with youth, but we expect you to have an interest in working with young people and children. We are looking for people who are willing to challenge themselves and thus also encourage the youngsters to participate in different activities. It's a benefit if you are willing to try new things without preconceptions. We appreciate a good sense of humour and the ability to laugh at yourself! We are all human, and sometimes we all say or do silly things and make mistakes. That is not the end of the world. The most important thing is that we apologize and try to learn from these mistakes. Please write a motivation letter where you describe why you want to volunteer for us and which of the positions you are applying for (1 or 2). We want you to start the letter with the word “MORO”, so we know you have read the entire application information. We want to promote the employment of people with diverse backgrounds, so we encourage people with different kinds of backgrounds, abilities, genders, religions, languages etc. to apply! Please note, that we will contact the most prominent applicants for an interview already before the application period ends. The interviews will be held on week 24 (Mon-Wed 8.-10.6.), week 25 (Mon-Wed 15.-17.6.), week 26 (Mon-Thu 22.-25.6.), and if needed on week 27 (Mon-Wed 29.6.-1.7.) in the late afternoon/ evening (Finnish time UTC+3).
