Description
Associação Renovar a Mouraria is a non-profit organisation based in the Mouraria neighbourhood in Lisbon. It is a community-based association working across three main areas: social intervention, cultural promotion, and local development. Its mission is to value cultural diversity, revitalise the neighbourhood, and foster social cohesion, through initiatives that engage residents, migrants, shopkeepers, artists, partner associations, and visitors. The volunteer will join a multidisciplinary team that organizes civic participation initiatives, community gatherings, cultural events, and activities for social and intercultural integration to:
- Encourage active participation of residents;
- Create safe spaces for dialogue and sharing;
- Value local businesses and cultural traditions;
- Support the integration of migrants and minorities;
- Promote social cohesion and combat isolation (especially the elderly and migrant women);
- Foster the appreciation of cultural diversity for inclusion.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Accommodation under suitable living conditions (within the budget allocated for that purpose by the National Agency);
Adequate working conditions, teamwork and a safe environment;
Opportunities and support for personal project development;
A tutor available to provide guidance and support;
Basic Portuguese language classes and an introduction to Portuguese culture during the first weeks of the project;
Training during the activity
The activity plan will be adjusted according to the volunteer interests and capacities. Additionally, there will also be allotted time each week to develop their personal projects which enrich both the volunteer and the organization.
Participant profile
The ideal volunteer should be a young person between 18 and 30 years old, motivated to learn, share experiences, and actively engage with the local community.
Key qualities include:
• Motivation and curiosity – willingness to acquire new skills, discover different realities, and share their own knowledge.
• Social and cultural sensitivity – openness to work with diverse groups (migrants, elderly, youth, shopkeepers, families), with respect for cultural differences and minorities.
• Communication skills – ability to listen actively and communicate effectively, especially across different cultures.
• Teamwork and collaboration – capacity to work in a team, learn from others, and contribute to collective goals.
• Initiative and creativity – openness to develop their own ideas and activities, bringing innovation and fresh perspectives aligned with the association’s work.
• Organisational skills – interest in supporting the planning, implementation, and evaluation of activities and projects.
• Flexibility and adaptability – readiness to adjust to different contexts, groups, and unexpected situations.
• Empathy and patience – especially in contact with vulnerable individuals or people in fragile situations.
• Digital literacy – basic skills to support communication, promotion, and collection of community input.
• Language skills – ability to work in English (optional), and willingness to learn Portuguese and other useful languages to better interact with the community.
