Description
AMICOS is a non-profit association in Galicia that supports people with intellectual disabilities and their families. As an ESC volunteer, you will join our Special Education School for children and young people with intellectual disabilities aged 3 to 21. The school helps students develop their abilities and skills for more opportunities in life, and works with other organisations and schools to promote their social inclusion. Working alongside our professionals, you will:
- Help design and carry out educational, leisure and cultural activities;
- Accompany students in daily activities and help them understand instructions;
- Suggest new ideas for activities;
- Organise environmental awareness activities;
You will live in a bilingual environment, where Galician and Spanish are spoken every day, and get to know the local community.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Accommodation: AMICOS provides a fully equipped shared apartment with a private room for each volunteer. The apartment will be shared with other volunteers.
Meals: Lunch is provided at the school from Monday to Friday. Volunteers also receive pocket money for their personal expenses.
Transport: the transportation between the house and the school will be provided by the organisation.
Training during the activity
- Welcome training at AMICOS: an introduction to our working standards, the school's methodology and facilities, and your tutor, who will guide you during your stay.
- Learning on the job: our team of experienced professionals will share their methods for supporting students with special needs.
- On-arrival training and mid-term evaluation: organised by the Spanish National Agency.
- Online Language Support (OLS): free online Spanish courses.
At the end of your activity, you can receive a Youthpass certificate recognising the skills you have developed.
Participant profile
We are looking for a volunteer aged 18 to 30 who:
- Has a B2 level of Spanish, since the tasks involve communicating directly with the staff and explaining activities and instructions to the students
- Is proactive, committed and open-minded
- Has a genuine interest in, and sensitivity towards, working with people with disabilities in leisure, cultural and environmental activities
- Is open to working in an intercultural environment, learning and sharing experiences
Knowledge of Galician is not required: you will pick it up naturally during your stay.
