Description

The purpose of the project is to raise awareness of environmental issues and the importance of biodiversity. The volunteer will develop his/her knowledge of the importance of having a rich variety of plant and animal life in an area, to develop skills in creating healthy ecosystems and an awareness of the health benefits of these practices. The volunteer will work three days a week in the Farm or Market Garden at Glencraig in order that he/she can develop skills in working outdoors in a natural environment with others. One day a week will be for training and development, see below for further information. The final day of the week the volunteer will be responsible for developing projects on their own or with others. The project coordinator will provide support for the volunteer with these projects. The volunteer will be involved in working with different groups by preparing the activities, working with the groups, carrying out evaluations of the activities.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteer will live in one of the houses on the Glencraig site with the other volunteers taking part in the Biodiversity Project. Each Volunteer will have their own bedroom, but he/she will have to share bathroom, living room and kitchen with others. The volunteers will have the possibility of eating together and preparing their own meals. Basic household stuff (bed linen, towels, shampoo, soap, etc.) and food are provided by Glencraig. There is easy access to public transport links to the nearby towns of Bangor, Holywood and Belfast.

Training during the activity

The volunteer will receive induction and orientation training on arrival at Glencraig. This will include training in relevant policies and procedures including health and safety and supporting people with learning disabilities. The volunteer will also take part in the foundation course (which takes place one morning per week) with other volunteers living and working at Glencraig. This will cover areas such as the Camphill approach, creativity, inclusion, sustainability and bio-diversity. The volunteer will also have ½ day per week for his/her own personal study relevant to the Project.

Participant profile

The volunteer should be over 18 years of age at the start of the placement, have an interest in promoting and developing Biodiversity in a natural setting. He/she should be enthusiastic to work in an outdoor inclusive environment with people who have a wide range of abilities. He/she should be willing to engage with children and adults from different backgrounds. The volunteer should be interested in developing the following qualities in themselves and others: • Friendly, approachable & interested in others • Patient, supportive & respectful • Responsible, positive, enthusiastic attitude
