Yerevan Special School N 14 for the Children with Visual Impairments

Yerevan Special School N 14 for the Children with Visual Impairments

Yerevan, Armenia

Activity description

The School was founded in 1939, and it’s the only one where the education is organized with Braille system. The pupils have various degrees of eyesight impairments. Thanks to the knowledge and education that they obtained most of the graduates were able to find their place in the society, achieving success in various spheres. The volunteer will help children to participate in all arts workshops and to support the staff in organizing these activities (painting, sculpturing, handicrafts, etc.) He/she will establish social contact with individual children and their parents by chats and games, will present his/her country and culture to the children, organize dancing and singing evenings, teach songs, create workshops on different interesting topics. Children really need the volunteer and get attached with them. The volunteer will learn how to work with invalid children, especially with visual problems and learn how to have activities with them. Duration of the project is 8-12 months.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteers will be provided with convenient accommodation: a hostel in Yerevan near the city center, featuring same-gendered rooms with two occupants each, shared bathrooms, and a spacious kitchen. This cozy hostel, equipped with all necessities, offers a garden and ensures safety. Approximately 17 long-term HUJ volunteers from different European countries reside in the hostel. On the first of each month, volunteers receive a monthly allowance, sent by HUJ to their bank cards, covering their pocket money, food, transportation, and internet expenses.

Training during the activity

Upon the volunteer's arrival at the airport, they will receive a warm welcome by HUJ. Following this, an introductory meeting will be held at the HUJ office, where the organizational staff will formally greet the volunteers and assist in essential procedures for their stay in Yerevan (obtaining an Armenian phone number, a physical bank card, and arranging a meeting with their assigned mentor). During their mobility in Yerevan, volunteers will engage in two training sessions - an on-arrival and a mid-term training - organized by SALTO in Georgia.

Participant profile

There are no gender restrictions regarding the selection/recruitment of volunteers. As per the ESC guide, the age of the volunteer should range from 18-30. The volunteer should be interested or have some experience in working with children; he/she should be enthusiastic, responsible, respectful, thoughtful and reliable. The main criterion for the choice of the volunteer-to-be are the activities they have planned for the project.
