Activity description

We are looking for a volunteer for an art and textile workshop. Lyhty's Textile Workshop Luovilla was founded in 1994. Luovilla is located in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. Since August 2018, Luovilla has 12 adults with intellectual disabilities. Luovilla's activities are guided by the workshop's individual resources and creativity-based way of working, as well as the need to express themselves through crafts or other arts. In Luovilla, the workshops design and produce handicraft products and artworks with the help of cultural directors for sales and exhibitions. Luovilla has the opportunity to practice professional skills such as craft, textile designer, salesman and visualist. The workshop also makes it possible to practice life skills. Luovilla provides an enabling environment to develop craft skills based on one's own strengths. The role of the volunteer is to support and assist the workshop clients with the tutors. Working hours between 9-16 from Mon-Friday. Weekends free.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteer will receive every month money for food and gets meals from Lyhty. Volunteer will have a room in a shared accommodation with other young volunteers. The accommodation will be fully equipped and electricity, water, gas will be covered by the hosting organization. The volunteer works 35 hours on 5 days per week from monday till friday. There is an entitlement to holidays for 2 days per month, altogether holidays days that can be taken after consulting with the Lyhty team. Volunteer gets the buss card from Lyhty.

Training during the activity

The volunteers will have a mentor working with him/her trough the year. Volunteers will meet other volunteers every month in group meetings with the project coordinator. Volunteers have private meetings also regularly with the project coordinator. The volunteer needs to do the hygienia test in the beginning of the year. We also give information about first aid. We have 10 volunteers working in Lyhty.

Participant profile

Good social skills and motivation to work with people with special needs are important. The work can be dynamic at times and requires such mentality. It is important to have the motivation to learn Finnish language. The participants have learned e.g. the following things. Responsibility, guidance, the field of developmental disability, equality, organization, organization of activities, language skills, cultural knowledge, dignity, resilience to pressure, flexibility, social and health care, cooking, cleaning and housekeeping etc Interest in and knowledge of crafts is considered an advantage.
