Margarete-Steiff-Haus - residential group for adults with disabilities

Stephanus Stiftung

Berlin, Germany

The application deadline has passed.

Activity description

The Stephanus Foundation is a Protestant charitable foundation that runs over 80 social welfare institutions and residential projects in Berlin and Brandenburg. We offer housing and support for people with disabilities. The Margarete-Steiff-Haus is a residential facility for adults and older people with disabilities in the Weissensee district in the northeast of Berlin. The inhabitants normally live there livelong and therefore pass through different stages of living and support with us. The Stephanus-Stiftung wants to make a contribution towards achieving more equality for people with disabilities in their everyday life while creating more awareness of cultural as well as human diversity. The traffic-calmed location and the proximity to the lake offer a high quality of living and, at the same time, good mobility thanks to an excellent connection to the public transport network.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteer will be living in an apartment (2 rooms, kitchen, and bathroom) at the project. Maybe the apartment has to be shared with another volunteer or intern; each one gets a single room. The pocket money will be 5 Euro/day in monthly payments and will be reimbursed for the costs of a monthly public transport ticket. He/she will receive food at the project. The volunteer will receive financial support for the travel costs from his/her place of origin to Germany and back. The amount depends on the distance travelled.

Training during the activity

There is an English-speaking mentor, responsible for answering any questions and supervising the volunteer´s work. The volunteer can take part in the regular training for staff members. The project has a lot of experience with German volunteers and has been a host project for the European Voluntary Service for several years.

Participant profile

- motivation to work in the project - ready to work and live with people with mental disabilities (experience in this field would be welcome but not necessary) - willing to take responsibility and work independently - be prepared to work in individual care and support - basic knowledge of the German language would be an advantage - reliability and punctuality
