Activity description

Older people are mostly vulnerable to loneliness and isolation which can result in serious health problems. Thousands of elderly people are facing isolation from society and find it hard to reach out because of stigma. Through this program you will try and find a ground to help in combating loneliness and isolation in people who have retired from work, who are no longer the fulcrum of the family and who in a way are more vulnerable. You as a volunteer will gain new skills which are useful for your personal and social development. 8 Local volunteers and 8 International Volunteers will be working together and exchanging experiences. Apart from very basic IT-related Workshops with the elderly, you will create other activities such as Active Ageing through Music, Active Ageing Through Art in partnership with local people in the sector of Art and Music. Through these activities and animation together with the elderly you will be able to speak about exercises that can help combat loneliness

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Accommodation: Hostel, St.Julian’s, Malta - Female Dorm and Mixed Dorm. Food Allowance: Groceries will be provided. Food allergies and dietary requirements will be taken into consideration. The hostel has a kitchen so you will prepare your daily food as a group. Transport: by bus of by foot Pocket Money: €5 daily

Training during the activity

All workshops will be prepared together with a mentor that will be supporting the group throughout the experience. A psychologist will also be guiding the group with different sessions in order to provide the volunteers with tools and kits on how to combat loneliness and isolation, which tools, the volunteers will be passing on to the elderly during the sessions.

Participant profile

We are looking for volunteers that are eager to motivate the elderly learn new things that help them with their daily life such as booking a taxi, using communication tools such as WhatsApp to keep in contact with people, etc. Therefore, volunteers are required to have the ability to use a smartphone / tablet and have the patience to teach these basic IT skills. Some IT skills are specific to Malta therefore volunteers need to be willing to learn such tools too. Volunteers will need to work in a team and have a positive attitude. Volunteers are required to be able to communicate in English.
