Activity description

Medicos del Mundo has been working in Guatemala since 1994, and its long history in the country means that it has the necessary operational resources to carry out its work. Activities will include clinical assistance, training & epidemiological monitoring as part of MdM's human mobility programme in Guatemala and other humanitarian emergencies. His/her tasks will be: Provide primary health care including sexual and reproductive health to migrant populations and/or those affected by displacement and other situations of violence including GBV or with international protection needs identified by project partners, MdM and/or other actors, for respective health care, prevention and referral to the public system. Strengthen the technical capacities of health institutions and other civil society organisations to respond to people in situations of violence, forced displacement and migration. Participate in the monitoring of health risks and epidemiological mapping of the country.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Living conditions in Guatemala are comfortable. All basic services and recreational facilities are easily accessible. The volunteer will be accommodated in one of the office houses of MdM or its counterparts and will receive a monthly allowance to cover his/her food expenses of 791 €. Accommodation; return flights; visa and vaccination costs; health insurance; and basic equipment (laptops and telephone) will be provided and covered during deployment. Transportation and accommodation will also be provided and covered for all work-related travel. 

Training during the activity

Volunteers will improve their professional knowledge through training in humanitarian action, and specific issues on security, gender, psychosocial support... and will be provided with training resources to continue their learning. Those selected will receive briefings/training at MdM headquarters in Madrid with the different departments related to the mission and the position, as well as mandatory online training on environmental issues before they start their field work. Training sessions will take place both in the countries of the supporting organisations and in of the host organisations.

Participant profile

Medical degree with active medical registration. Basic first level clinical experience. Spanish required, knowledge of English would be highly valued. Self-care and stress management. Experience in working with groups in situation or at risk of exclusion. Experience in intercultural contexts, humanitarian organisations, and in contexts of migration and forced displacement will be an asset. Training in Public Health is highly valued. Knowledge of the Latin American context, especially countries in the Mesoamerican region.
