Poke the Globe - October 2023

Nuorisokeskus Metsäkartano
Metsäkartano Youth Center
Rautavaara, Finland
Description
Youth Centre Metsäkartano is hosting three weeks long group volunteering project Poke the Globe. During the project volunteers are staying in the youth center and their main task is to organize an international activity day for the local school groups. The aim of the activity day is to inform local youth about different international possibilities and encourage them to make initiatives in their local communities. The day usually gathers approximately 200 pupils visiting Metsäkartano from all around the rural region. Volunteers will also visit local schools and/or youth houses where they lead short workshops for the local youth. Volunteers work generally from Monday to Friday from 9am to 16pm. Evenings and weekends are free time for the volunteers but the youth center has a lot of outdoor gear to borrow and some activity possibilities to spend free time. OUR YOUTH CENTER IS IN THE MIDDLE OF NATURE next to a national park. We have now (28th of Sept) 2 last minute places available.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Accommodation is organised in a common log house in the surroundings of Metsäkartano Youth Center. Metsäkartano Youth Center is located in the middle of beautiful nature and there is natural park right next to the Youth Center. The log house is a traditional house by a lake, with kitchen, common area and sauna inside, etc. Volunteers live together in the house, in different rooms where 2-3 people share a room. Food is provided by Metsäkartano either in our own restaurant (usually breakfast/lunch/sometimes also dinner) or by giving supplies to the volunteers to cook in their cabin.
Training during the activity
There is a 3 day long on-arrival training in the beginning of the activity which will prepare the volunteers to live and work in Finland and in Metsäkartano. The on-arrival training gives introduction to living and working together with people from different backgrounds and cultures. The training is provided by a youth work specialist. During the activity there is also a youth work specialist working together the volunteering group in daily basis. If more training and support is needed, it is possible to organise to some extend.
