Gender Advocate Kenya

Gender Advocate Kenya

Mondo NGO and WEFOCO

Shianda, Kakamega, Kenya

The application deadline has passed.

Activity description

Mondo works in cooperation with a local partner in the Shianda village of Western Kenya, offering financial and quality aid to students of the area, and assisting local women in establishing their sewing entrepreneurship. Together with our partner organisation Western Focus Community Organisation (WEFOCO) we set up different projects on education, livelihood, women empowerment and healthcare (HIV/AIDS is still an issue). This position is for a volunteer who is passionate about gender issues in rural communities: promoting education for young mothers and working with the topic of gender-based violence and women's rights. The volunteer will raise gender-related awareness at schools and conduct social behavioural and positive interaction workshops for teachers. The volunteer will be involved in the project of gender equality, and will give the women the necessary counselling to give them a voice and encourage them to be independent and stand up for their rights.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteer will live in Shianda village, Western Kenya. During work, the main mode of transportation will be motorbikes or walking shorter distances. Motorbikes are an ideal mode of transport in the interior village, where the routes are not well maintained. The host organisation will provide the volunteers’ safety and locked accommodation in the houses/apartments. They can have access to a kitchen and shower with all useful necessities: a water closet, tap, gas cooker, dishes, Wi-Fi. The volunteer will receive a monthly allowance of 390 euros to cover basic needs and local transport.

Training during the activity

The volunteer will have the opportunity to get deep knowledge about working in the selected field of work in rural Kenya. The training includes working in a local context and integrating with different communities. The volunteer can participate in local language courses. Volunteering will build new contacts and partnerships.

Participant profile

Experience in gender issues and in providing psychosocial support is highly desidered, but not a must if the volunteer is able to show the ability of working independently and having group facilitation skills. Experience of travelling in less developed countries, especially those struggling for their rights is an asset. Autonomy, flexibility and adaptation is well welcomed. Fluent in English.
