Activity description

In cooperation with Kongo Community Development Association [KoCDA] and Ghana Education Service, Mondo works in the Nabdam district in northern Ghana. Through financial support, we enable the local children to receive education, and on improving the well-being and independence of local women. KoCDA seeks an active individual to play an integral role in various stages of the organisation's journey towards helping to leverage existing partnership projects already being implemented in close collaboration with Mondo, in Estonia. We currently undertake shea butter extraction, basket weaving, tree plantation and animal rearing with women groups. We are looking forward to working with an individual who has the capacity for organisation, planning, career development, performance management, workshop facilitation.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteer will be hosted at the guest house, with titled lockable rooms, toilet, shower, and ceiling fans. There is running water and electricity and a kitchen with a refrigerator. The guest house is 5 minutes’ walk from the village centre and the ICT centre of KoCDA 7 minutes away. Mobile phone and internet service is reliable. Regular local buses travel to the region's capital, Bolgatanga (30-min drive). There is a market square at Kongo and small kiosks also open daily. The volunteer will receive a monthly allowance of 390 euros to cover basic needs and local transport.

Training during the activity

Support the development of local women cooperatives in Nabdam district. Training and mentoring the management boards of cooperatives in administrative, financial and leadership skills. Developing new marketing and sales channels both locally and internationally and training the cooperatives in efficient client communication and handling of orders. Setting up efficient management systems and production chains to optimise production and implement sustainable and safe production methods and practices (e.g. more energy efficient stoves). Researching new business opportunities.

Participant profile

We are looking for a motivated volunteer with organisational skills, comfortable teaching and working with children aged 10–17 years on art, making designs and weaving; as well as working with women aged 20–50 years on basket weaving, on colour designs and related activities. Overall, the volunteer has strong experience in an area of art, design and craft work and is motivated in improving the packaging of shea butter for the European market.
