description of organisation

The Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) is a non-governmental organization that promotes the study and conservation of birds and counts with the work of a large number of professionals and enthusiasts who develop activities in the field of ornithology and nature conservation. Currently, it has about 4000 associates and develops nature conservation projects in the national territory (mainland, Azores and Madeira) and also some with foreign partnerships (Cape Verde, São Tomé, Greece, Spain and Malta).
In accordance with the general objectives of our association, our Madeira and Azores delegations promote and encourage the study of the biology and ecology of birds in the regions, developing management and conservation measures for the species and their habitats. In addition to more specific conservation projects, SPEA in Madeira and Azores also promotes various field and volunteer activities, with partners and collaborators and also with the local population. The main objective of these actions is to divulge the archipelago's rich avifauna, as well as to encourage the involvement of local communities in the conservation of natural resources, developing themes such as environmental citizenship and volunteering.
The delegations from the Madeira and Azores regions have experience in the development of several projects, carrying out activities for associates and awareness campaigns in the region.
Based on the successful experience obtained in recent years, where we received several volunteers, we are very motivated in the continuation and promotion of new projects, contributing to the creation of opportunities for other young people to get involved in conservation projects, visiting unparalleled places, working with unique bird species in the world and promoting their involvement as messenger citizens of correct environmental policies aimed at the sustainability of the planet. In the same way, we aim to improve our human development by contacting proactive young people of different nationalities.
