Description of organisation

The principal aims of the organization are. :

• To preserve the unique local landscape
• To protect the cultural heritage in the area
• To preserve and protect the local fauna and flora
• To restore damaged natural and cultural monuments
• To implement monitoring, research, collect information on environmental issues
• To facilitate the development of ecotourism in the park’s territory
• To organize and realize educational, cultural activities, events, to advocate for natural
and cultural protection

Grazute Regional Park was founded in 1992 for the protection of valuable laky, forested landscape of upper reaches of the River Sventoji with biodiversity and ethno–cultural treasures. Grazute regional park 30000 ha) is situated in Zarasai and Ignalina districts. 55 % of the land area are covered by forests, 20 % are lakes and small swamps. There are more than 90 lakes. Lake Sventas is unique in the largest water swing. Antalieptes Marios with brilliant islands and peninsulas is a man-made lake, which has the most sophisticated configuration of shore in Lithuania. Lake Luodis (1320 ha) is the 6th biggest in Lithuania and has two sandy spits. Wonderful slopes of River Savasa, rapids of River Sventoji are well known too. There are small towns in the park as well as many villages rich in valuable historical and architectural monuments. The park is composed of landscape, telmological, geomorphic, hydrographic, and urban reserves. Many varieties of plants and animals are protected here.
