description of organisation

Our school is a union of two schools, the Grammar School of Jan Blahoslav and Secondary Pedagogical School. There are students between 13-19 at the grammar school and students between 15-19 at the pedagogical school. Those students are supposed to be teachers at kindergartens (their main subjects are pedagogy, art, music, drama and PE), while students from the grammar school attend general educational programmes and continue their studies at universities.
There are about 850 students and about 70 highly qualified teachers. The school provides students with the opportunity to study foreign languages (English, German, French and Russian), and offers preparatory courses for Cambridge exams (FCE) and Goethe Zertifikat. Students can also take the Goethe Zertificat exams at this school as it has been co-operating with the Goethe-Institut.
Our school organizes the spare time of students by offering a variety of interesting extracurricular activities. The school students can attend several language clubs, a sign language club, sports clubs, a film club, choir etc. The participants usually meet in the morning, before the classes, or in the afternoon, once or twice a week. There are several gyms and sports fields so students can enjoy a variety of sports. Students also regularly attend sports courses - ski, cycling and hiking.
The school organizes a number of school events which are very popular with the students. These events are organized by the students and the students also actively participate in all of them. There are concerts of student bands, sports days, literary café (where talented students perform), exhibitions of students´ art works, theatre plays etc. Students publish a student magazine and work in the school parliament.
The available facilities of the school are constantly improved and renovated: access to the Internet everywhere in the school; specialized study rooms; multi-media in classrooms and interactive white boards in some of them etc. There is also a drama classroom with a stage. The art classrooms are well-equipped too.
The aim of the school is to educate European oriented students and teachers, use innovative methodologies and work towards bilingual education in different areas, so it provides students with theoretical knowledge as well as the opportunity to gain real life experience abroad. The majority of teachers have experience with European projects, they are motivated and interested in the project activities. The management of the school is supportive and the school participation in European programmes is one of their priorities.
The area of Přerov is considered a socially excluded area as there is a strong Roma community and the rate of unemployment is above the country average. That's why the school has to prepare the students for the life in such environment and especially the students of the pedagogical branch are taught how to include children from disadvantaged families in pre-school education and after school activities organised by local institutions. There are many events in which students participate or which they help to organize. They help in several youth clubs in Přerov (with Christmas or Easter activities, with teaching children traffic education etc), they attend several kindergartens and prepare various programmes for them, such as theatre plays, they also organize events for primary schools, for example sports days.
In our school there are students with different cultural backgrounds, handicapped students, students with learning difficulties and talented students and all of them need individual approach and innovative methods are needed to find a way how to improve their results and help them to feel satisfied with their studies.
