The University of Glasgow is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's four ancient universities. It was founded in 1451. It is currently a member of Universitas 21 - an international grouping of universities dedicated to setting worldwide standards for higher education - , the Russell Group and The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The University is one of the top 100 of the world's universities; it has been named Scottish University of the Year by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018, it is ranked joint 69th in the world and was the first UK university to be rated as 5 Stars Plus overall (QS World University Rankings 2019).
Over the last five centuries and more, the University has constantly worked to push the boundaries of what’s possible and has fostered the talents of seven Nobel laureates, two Prime Ministers and Scotland’s inaugural First Minister.

The University has around 28,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and welcomes students from more than 140 countries worldwide; it has a global community of over 219,000 alumni. The University is also a major employer in the city of Glasgow with more than 8,000 staff, including more than 3,400 research and teaching staff.
The University has strong network of partners across Europe and has a long tradition of exchanging staff and students, before the existence of the Erasmus programme which the University joined at its inception. It also has a global footprint through innovative transnational education with strategic partnerships with the Universities of Columbia, Hong Kong, McGill and Sydney and has unique partnerships with the Singapore Institute of Technology, Nankai University and the University of Electronic Science & Technology of China.
